Living close to other people does not necessarily mean having company. A Seattle resident may miss conversations even when shops and activities are nearby. Companionship care should start with the relationships and interests they want to maintain, not an assumption that a busier calendar is always better.
Keep the person’s interests at the center
Ask about a hobby that has fallen aside or someone they would like to call. A caregiver visit can include conversation, reading together or help setting up a chosen activity. Explain language and communication preferences early, without assuming a particular caregiver match is available. Let the person decide whether they want active company or a quieter visit.
- Discuss permission before sharing family updates.
- Keep supplies for a favorite activity easy to find.
- Allow the plan to change on a low-energy day.
Choose an outing for the experience, not the distance
Seattle’s Age Friendly resources include links to opportunities for social connection. If one appeals, check registration, access and the expected length directly with the organizer. A nearby destination may still involve steps, waiting or more walking than the person wants. Discuss accompaniment and transport separately and leave room to return early. Time together at home can remain the plan when going out is not appealing.
Questions families ask
Can a companion help my parent use a phone or tablet?
Simple help with an agreed call or activity may fit the visit. Protect passwords and financial information, and discuss boundaries before asking a caregiver to manage online accounts.
Does companionship include continuous supervision?
Not automatically. Explain any supervision or safety concerns during the assessment. A social visit and a plan for someone who cannot be left alone involve different responsibilities and hours.
Planning around local support
Seattle’s Age Friendly resource page directs older adults and family caregivers to Community Living Connections for help finding aging and disability services. It is a separate community resource, not a booking service for Prestigious Homecare.
Find Community Living Connections and city links for aging-related information, community activities and practical support options.
